Whenever I think about five-star life health, family, friends, balance, security, giving, helping others, mindfulness, wonderful experiences, gratitude, a sense of purpose, laughter and improving oneself come to mind.
You might say what about money? Although having money is important and can give one access to luxury services and products, one doesn't need to be a millionaire to enjoy an amazing life. Money is important to creating a sense of security which is key to an overall feeling of happiness, but that is achieved by having enough money to ensure a roof over one's head, food and access to healthcare and education.
One of the longest-running study on happiness, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, which ran for almost 80 years, found that close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives. It is essential to connect with others and to make sure that we choose wisely with whom. The key to a long, happy and healthy life is to have great relationships with your family, friends, and people you work with. Find out more about the study's findings here.
In a world that is so focused on consumerism, fame and material wealth, it is refreshing and reassuring that Harvard's study showed that they do not influence the sense of happiness and a five-star life. I hope that more and more people will stop linking their happiness to them.
As I mentioned, mindfulness is one of the best tools that one can use to protect our health, both physical and mental. Being fully present, not judging yourself, and dealing with your emotions greatly impact your happiness. You might say it is hard to be in a mindful state, but I promise you it is actually quite easy. Find out more about mindfulness from the NHS.
One of the other things I noted is helping others. One of the greatest gifts we can give others, and ourselves is the gift of time. In a world where we are constantly on the run, it might look like we do not have enough time, but no question about it, we do. Taking time to focus on ourselves and others creates great relationships and paves the way to wonderful experiences without the need to spend huge amounts of money. Volunteering is one of the best ways to give to increase your happiness and other peoples happiness. Find out how to volunteer here.
Improving oneself should not be rooted in the sense of dislike of your life but in the pursuit of enhancing your already present happiness. Wanting to better yourself doesn't mean you are not enough and that you are not happy and grateful for what you are and have. It just means that you are following your purpose and giving yourself the best chances of achieving it. Whether you achieve it or not should not impact your happiness, but how you go about it will. Take time to reflect on what you are doing every day to better yourself, and if you are not satisfied, change the way you go about it.
